About this camp

The Northwestern University CIERA Research Experiences in Astronomy (REACH) program offers high school students an immersive, hands-on experience in astronomy research. The core program provides intensive training in the Python programming language and astro-related packages, akin to a coding bootcamp. Students develop essential research skills and gain a foundational understanding of various astronomy topics. They apply their programming knowledge to complete mini-projects inspired by ongoing research at CIERA. Beyond the technical skills, participants engage in extracurricular activities such as college and career panels, solar observing at the Dearborn Observatory, and social games. A limited number of students can extend their experience with 'REACH Further,' a three-week independent research project under the guidance of a CIERA mentor, culminating in a presentation of their work.

What a typical day looks like
