About this camp

The UChicago Data Science Institute Summer Lab is an immersive 8-week paid summer research program. High school students (who reside year-round in the Chicago area) and undergraduate students are paired with data science mentors from various domains, including computer science, social science, climate and energy policy, public policy, materials science, and biomedical research. Participants engage in and hone their skills in research methodologies, practices, and teamwork. The program emphasizes rigorous, applied, and interdisciplinary data science research within a cohort community. Students gain first-hand access to impactful research, develop an understanding of fundamental data science methodologies, and receive specialized training relevant to their lab's research. The program culminates in an end-of-summer symposium where students present their research findings through videos, simulating a professional conference experience. Professional development and training are also provided to prepare students for future careers in data science and computing.
