This is a paid, two-summer internship program specifically for Chicago public high school students, offering hands-on experience and comprehensive college and career readiness in STEM fields.
The UChicago Youth Internship Program (YIP) is a paid, two-summer program designed for Chicago Public School and charter school students interested in STEM careers, particularly in health sciences, computer sciences, or IT services. The Year 1 Experience focuses on career and college preparation through workshops, seminars, and activities. These include a guest speaker series with STEM professionals, workplace tours, professional leadership lessons, college tours, post-secondary planning, and service learning. Interns gain valuable skills and experience applicable to college and the workforce, and prepare for the college application process. For the second summer, participants who successfully completed Year 1 are eligible to reapply for a six-week paid internship within various University units, focusing on hands-on job experience in their chosen field. This program aims to strengthen the pipeline to STEM careers for South Side high school students.
Year 1 interns work and attend programming Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., participating in workshops, seminars, and activities focused on career and college preparation.
The program is ideal for motivated, hardworking Chicago public high school students (including charter schools) aged 16 and older who are residents of Chicago and have an interest in learning about health sciences, computer sciences, or IT services.
