About this camp

The UIC Cancer Health Equity Summer Scholars (CHESS) program is an eight-week intensive training and mentoring program designed for underrepresented high school students interested in cancer research and other health professions. Participants gain hands-on research experience by working in a University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) faculty lab on an independent project. This involves developing skills in research methods, data collection, analysis, and scientific interpretation. The program culminates in a science report and presentations at the Cancer Center's student research symposium, where students showcase their work to family, friends, and the scientific community. Beyond lab work, students attend workshops and lectures focused on building research, professional, and academic skills, including career exploration, networking, and ethical conduct in research. CHESS aims to cultivate a diverse future healthcare workforce by providing early exposure to cutting-edge cancer research and fostering academic preparation.
