About this camp

The University of Chicago Data Science Institute (DSI) Summer Lab is an immersive 8-week paid research program for high school and undergraduate students. Participants are paired with data science mentors from various fields, including computer science, data science, social science, climate and energy policy, public policy, materials science, and biomedical research. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through projects that simulate real-world data science tasks, often involving AI and machine learning techniques. Students engage in rigorous, applied, and interdisciplinary data science research, honing skills in research methodologies, practices, and teamwork. The program culminates in an end-of-summer symposium where students present their research findings through videos and engage in Q&A sessions, similar to a professional conference. Additionally, students participate in professional development and training to prepare for future careers in data science and computing, with some alumni continuing research with their mentors.
