The University of Chicago Data Science Institute Summer Lab is an immersive 8-week paid research program designed for undergraduate students and Chicago-area high school students. Participants are paired with data science mentors from various fields, including computer science, social science, climate and energy policy, public policy, materials science, and biomedical research. Through this mentorship, students engage with and hone their skills in research methodologies, practices, and teamwork. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through projects that simulate real-world data science tasks, culminating in a symposium where students present their research findings. Students gain an understanding of fundamental data science methodologies and specialized training within their lab's research area. The program also includes professional development, a weekly speaker series, and social events to foster a strong cohort community.
While students are not required to log hours, they are expected to work a full-time schedule each week from 9am – 5pm, with much of the day spent with mentors on research work, refining methodologies, or learning to present findings.
